Give From the Froth, Not the Cup

8/22/20262 min read

Picture yourself holding a warm cup of coffee.

The cup is full, with a layer of froth rising just above the rim. That froth is what you have available to give—to your work, your team, your family, your friends, and all the other places that need your energy.

Give from the froth. Never from the cup.

Yet so many of us live very differently.

We give away the froth. Then we start pouring from the cup. And eventually, we find ourselves scraping the bottom, wondering why we're exhausted, disconnected, impatient, or simply don't feel like ourselves anymore.

We've normalized living in depletion.

We tell ourselves we'll rest after this project. We'll take the vacation when things settle down. We'll exercise when we have more time. We'll reconnect with friends when work isn't so busy.

But there will always be something asking for our energy.

The answer isn't to stop giving. Caring for people, contributing meaningful work, supporting our families, and showing up for the things that matter are beautiful parts of life.

The goal is to give without emptying the cup.

That requires paying attention to all the places that refill us.

Rest.

Movement.

Relationships.

Nature.

Play.

Quiet.

Creativity.

Meaningful work.

Time when nobody needs anything from us.

Balance doesn't mean giving every part of our lives equal time. Some weeks, work will need more. Other weeks, family will. Sometimes we need to turn inward and take care of ourselves.

Balance is noticing when one part of our life has been taking from the cup for too long—and intentionally replenishing it.

Especially as leaders, this matters.

When we consistently operate depleted, we don't leave that depletion at the office door. It affects how we listen, how we communicate, how patient we are, how we make decisions, and ultimately how we lead.

We cannot continually pour into everyone around us while treating ourselves as an unlimited resource.

So this week, instead of asking yourself:

How much more can I give?

Try asking:

What is filling my cup—and am I giving from my abundance or from my reserves?

Protect the cup.

Fill it often.

And give generously from the froth.
